Art Comes to Life at the Miami Design Preservation League

December 21st, 2020 by

Miami Beach and the surrounding areas might be most known for their sunny shores and sandy beaches, but there’s much more to this Florida hotspot than fun in the sun.

In fact, Miami is home to a passionate community of art and culture. While the architecture and design of the city has changed and evolved over the years, it’s important to honor the work of the past and maintain its cultural value.

That is exactly what the Miami Design Preservation League strives to achieve. It’s also why we are so pleased to feature this local organization in our Local Spotlight.

About the Miami Design Preservation League

The Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) first opened its doors in 1976. Since then, it has stood by its mission to “preserve, protect, and promote the architectural, cultural, social, and environmental integrity of Miami Beach and the surrounding areas.”

Here’s how it all began. In August of 1976, Barbara Baer Capitman and her son John Capitman were in search of a way to celebrate the United States’ Bicentennial. Working with local designers, they identified a section of 1930’s buildings around South Miami that would work well as a historic district of 20th century architecture.

Its first meeting was held a few months later in December. One year later, in 1977, MDPL was incorporated by the state of Florida.

MDPL Tours

The MDPL offers several types of tours that encompass various areas of Miami Beach. Check out a few of them below.

Art Deco Walking Tour

Explore the Mediterranean Revival, Miami Modern, and Art Deco styles found throughout the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. You’ll view various structures and buildings, ranging from hotels and restaurants, and enjoy a peek inside some historic interiors. This tour is one-and-a-half to two hours long, rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.

Jewish Miami Beach Tour

This tour explores the history of Miami’s Jewish population throughout the years by looking at the impact of a select group of key Jewish institutions and individuals, as well as different architectural styles.

If you’re looking to tour with a group of friends or family, MDPL also offers private art deco tours. These tours are offered for groups of ten or more people and include free admission to the Art Deco Museum and Gift Shop.
