Honda Insight vs Toyota Prius

The hybrid compact car market has become more competitive in recent years. Automakers have taken steps produce more environmentally friendly cars. Residents of Miami, Doral, and Hialeah know the Toyota Prius is a highly regarded best-selling hybrid car. Honda hopes its new version of the hybrid model, the Insight, can make a name for itself, too. How do these cars measure up against each other? Read our Honda Insight vs. Toyota Prius comparison and consider which is the better car for you.

Performance

The Honda Insight gets its power from an electric motor and a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine to create 151 horsepower. With a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors combined, the Prius only manages 121 horsepower.  Both vehicles have an electronic continuously variable transmission.

While drivers don’t look for speed in their hybrid cars, the Insight gives decent acceleration when needed. The Prius, on the other hand, sometimes struggles to maintain its acceleration when merging onto highway traffic. Both cars do have strong suspension systems that can handle most road bumps without any issues.

Fuel efficiency is a major selling point when buying a hybrid car. Both cars are comparable and rank near the top of their class in their efficiency. The Insight gets an EPA-estimated 55 MPG for city and 49 MPG1 for highway, while the Prius gets an EPA-estimated 54 MPG for city and 50 MPG for highway.

Honda Insight vs Toyota Prius Interior

Both cars have standard cloth-upholstered seats and can seat up to five people. You have the optional leatherette seats for the Prius. You can upgrade to leather seats for the Insight and they come standard in the top Touring trim.

Both the Prius and Insight offer comfortable front seats. The difference is in the back seats. While the seats are fine, tall people may feel cramped sitting in the back of the Prius. The Insight gives you more legroom with 37.4 inches versus the 33.4 inches for the Prius. Therefore, adults riding in the back may feel more comfortable in the Honda for long car rides.

Technology and Safety Features

Both cars offer an impressive selection of technology features, such as automatic climate control, Bluetooth®, navigation systems, and innovative infotainment systems. The Prius doesn’t offer Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, which may disappoint drivers who wanted to connect with their mobile devices. The Insight does have the Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ option in most of its trims.

Honda and Toyota take car and driver safety seriously, therefore their cars come with plenty of  standard safety features. The Honda Sensing® and Toyota Safety Sense™ packages offer standard features such as Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning with Emergency Brakes, and Adaptive Cruise Control. These features help alert you to potential crashes and avoid major accidents.
